INFORMATION ON RECYCLING and SOLID WASTE- GARBAGE PICK-UP IN THE BOROUGH OF RINGWOOD
RECYCLING:
Recycling has become a way of life in Ringwood. As well as saving our environment by reusing waste, Ringwood also saves taxpayer's dollars with its recycling program. Since 1989 Ringwood has saved over $2.8 million dollars in solid waste disposal. The following information outlines recycling procedures as well as recycling schedules and permitted items.
Contractor: Scuffy Carting is our residential curbside recycling contractor. Questions or concerns may be addressed directly to them at 973-778-3232 or the Ringwood Recycling Department at 973-475-7130.
Recycling Schedule: Curbside collection is scheduled for twice per month pickups on the 1st and 3rd full weeks of each month. Please click here to confirm your recycling pickup day.
Junk mail: Must be tied in bundles or places in brown paper bags at curbside. Magazines, office paper, envelopes, holiday wrapping paper, computer paper, school paper, telephone books, newspaper magazine inserts, paperback books and books without hard covers all fall into this category.
Corrugated cardboard: Must be flattened, tied and bundled. Brown paper grocery bags may be included.
Commingled Containers: Aluminum, steel and tin cans, glass jars and and bottles and plastic #1 & #2 may be combined in a reusable container at curbside (no larger than 32 gallons). Place commingled materials in the hard sided container with the Borough's "Recycling and Ringwood - Together It Works" sticker affixed to the container. You may pick up this sticker at Borough Hall. Do not include plastic bags in this container.
Newspapers: Must be tied and bundled. They cannot be placed in brown paper bags or boxes. Newspaper magazine inserts must go with junk mail.
Ringwood Recycling Center: You may drop off your recycling at Peter's Mine Road (off of Margaret King Avenue). The center is open Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5:00 pm (Wednesdays 12 noon to 8:00 pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day). Materials accepted at the recycling center include metal items, junk mail, corrugated cardboard, commingled containers (aluminum, tin and steel cans, glass jars and bottles, and plastic #1 and #2, newspapers, household and auto batteries, tires (cost is $3.00 per tire), used clothing, debagged leaves, motor oil, Christmas trees (month of January only). The recycling center will be closed on the following holidays: New Years Day, Easter Sunday, Independence Day and Christmas.

Commercial/Industrial Recycling: Recycling is scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Mondays for commingled (aluminum, steel and tin cans, glass and plastic containers). The 2nd and 4th Fridays for junk mail, cardboard and newspapers (includes all office paper, magazines, computer paper, envelopes, etc.). For commercial/Industrial recycling, junk mail can be placed in a hard sided container or box. Cardboard must be flattened and tied. Newspaper must be tied and bundled. Commingled must be in a reusable container no larger than 32 gallons. Do not include plastic bags.
RESIDENTIAL SOLID WASTE - GARBAGE:
Scuffy Carting is our residential solid waste contractor. Residential solid waste collection is once per week, with collection days Monday through Friday. Please click here to confirm your solid waste - garbage pick up day.
Bulk waste - Items such as carpeting (must be tied, rolled and cut in 4 foot sections), sofas, mattresses, televisions, etc. fall into this category. You may put out one (1) item each week of heavy bulk with your regularly scheduled weekly sold waste pick-up.
If you are moving or have a large volume of heavy bulk waste, you must make private arrangements to have these items hauled away. tipping fees (cost to dispose of garbage) are currently $60.00 per ton.
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
Curbside Heavy Metal Pick-up: Once per month, by appointment only, on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Scuffy Carting is the contractor and accepts metal items including stoves, refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, hot water heaters, disassembled metal swing sets, iron railing and all miscellaneous metal items. ***Federal law requires that CFCs (freon) must be removed from all refrigerators, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers before the items are picked up. If your dealer does not take the old appliance, you may call the Recycling Department at 475-7130, to be put on a list to have the heavy metal item removed from curbside. Please call the recycling office anytime during the month but before 4:00 pm on the Thursday before the 3rd Saturday of each month for pick-up. Metal items can also be brought to the recycling center during normal hours of operations and placed in the "scrap metal" dumpster.
Christmas Trees: All Christmas trees must be brought to the Ringwood recycling Center during operating hours in the month of January only. There is no curbside pick-up.
Curbside Leaf Collection: Scuffy Carting has been contracted for curbside leaf collection once per week during October and November and again once per week in April and May. leaves must be placed at curbside on Monday mornings prior to 6:00 am. due to the volume of leaves, if yours are not collected on Monday, they will be collected on Tuesday or Wednesday. leaves must be placed in recyclable, biodegradable brown leaf bags. No plastic bags or brown grocery bags will be accepted.
Curbside leaf collection includes small brush (plants, shrubs and tree branches). Brush must not exceed four foot in length and two inches in diameter and must be tied and bundled. No logs, stumps, Christmas trees or grass clippings will be accepted. You may also drop off your leaves at the recycling center any time during the year. All leaves must be debagged at the center and no grass clippings are accepted. Brush may be dropped off at the center April, May, October and November as well as the 1st and 3rd full weekend (Saturday & Sunday) of each of the other months of the year.
Computer, Electronics and Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Service: The County of Passaic in conjunction with the Borough of Ringwood sponsors two household waste and two computer and electronics drop off days each year. Please click here for information on dates, times and locations.
Construction and Demolition Material: As mandated by the State of New Jersey and the Passaic County Office of Recycling it is mandatory to recycle the following construction and demolition debris: concrete, brick, block, asphalt, asphalt based roofing scrap, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, piping, non-chemically treated wood, tree stumps, and tree trunks. It is the responsibility of the resident and/or the contractor to properly recycle these items. Upon disposal of these items you must obtain a weight tonnage slip shat should be forwarded to the Ringwood recycling Coordinator for recycling tonnage credit. Our solid waste contractor cannot, by law, pick up garbage containing construction or demolition materials.
