Department of Public Works
The Department of Public Works is one of the Borough’s largest and most essential departments, responsible for the operation, maintenance, and overall functioning of the community’s infrastructure. Far beyond general grounds maintenance, the DPW serves as a critical backbone, ensuring public assets are safe and continuously improved for residents and businesses.
DPW oversees roadway maintenance and repairs, including pothole patching, resurfacing, street sweeping, signage, and traffic control support. The department also conducts snow and ice removal operations, including plowing and salting Borough streets and municipal parking areas to maintain safe travel during winter conditions. In addition, DPW maintains stormwater and drainage systems through the cleaning of catch basins and culverts and responds to flooding and related emergencies to help protect public and private property.
The department also oversees all contractors performing work on behalf of the Borough, ensuring compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and quality of work.
DPW maintains Borough parks, fields, and grounds, including landscaping, mowing, tree maintenance, and upkeep of recreational facilities and Open Space areas. The department also supports the maintenance of municipal buildings and facilities and manages the Borough’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. In addition, DPW oversees the Water Department, including routine maintenance and emergency response to water main breaks and other system issues. The department responds to a wide range of service requests and emergencies, such as downed trees, roadway hazards, and storm damage, playing a vital role in public safety.
Additionally, DPW supports all municipal-sponsored events, including parades and outdoor concerts, by assisting with setup, coordination, and breakdown. This includes placing equipment, signage, and barriers, and ensuring event sites are clean, safe, and fully restored afterward.
Through these essential responsibilities, the DPW remains a cornerstone of the Borough’s daily operations.
